Fiber Artist

I have been sewing, embroidering, weaving and doing other needle arts since childhood but it was only after retiring from my career as a social worker that I began doing fiber art professionally. To interpret my chosen subject I use various techniques to capture the essence of the subject matter. In the nature series that I have most recently been doing I have tried to capture gardens and plants using a variety of materials and techniques. Most frequently used are appliqué and embroidery (both hand and free motion machine); hand beading, and embellishments of found objects. Many of the fabrics that I use are hand-dyed and/or painted. My drawing tool often becomes a needle whether it is by hand or the sewing machine. I am interested in the texture as well as color and therefore sometimes use non-traditional fabrics in my quilted works.

I am also interested in combining the technology of the computer and printing on fabric. I have altered photographic images on the computer, printed the image on fabric then printed with linoleum blocks on top of the newly created fabric. This fabric is then used to create a quilted piece, sometimes in conjunction with other fabrics or alone. Embellishments may be threads, appliqué, buttons, and beads. I utilize images from nature or from my extensive travels. Using these same techniques I also do Judaic work creating various articles for use in the home and synagogue.
